Thought for the day...

Posted by Rob Johnson on Thursday, September 11, 2014, In : Music
People often ask me why there are no vocals in my songs and why I've chosen to make instrumental pieces of music. A couple of years ago I released an album where I decided to take a different approach to lyrics, trying to incorporate them into the use of imagery to compliment the music on the record. The result was a series of videos that accompanied each track on the album, that hopefully answered the question of 'where's the lyrics?'

After my first album people would tell me what they imag...

The John Butler Trio

Posted by Rob Johnson on Friday, February 8, 2013, In : Music
So I saw this video for the first time in my life last week, and it's incredible. It's one of those bands / musicians where you cannot believe you hadn't heard of them before. But needless to say, I am glad the John Butler Trio are in my life now. I've listened to nothing else all week, bought all their albums, watched entire gigs online, the works. If you read my twitter feed you might already have seen me write about this but fuck it, this is too good not to share. So without further ado......

I know I am about 5 years late on this, but this is an absolute brilliant idea, and a fantastic show. Highly recommended. Makes me want to listen to some Hall and Oates...

On Writing.

Posted by on Saturday, January 28, 2012, In : Music
I started writing by just opening up a journal  and there were words that were truthful because they weren’t meant to be lyrics, and that had a sense of integrity to it that I could tell felt real. And that became kind of a template for me to a) stay sane and get this out of my system, and b) I thought that taking some of this ugliness that was bottled up inside me and channeling it into something that had some degree of beauty to it at times, felt like “Wow, I’ve found my voice.”

Hey, hey, hey, Mr. Hangman,
You go get your rope.
Your daughters weren't careful
And I fear that I am a slippery slope.
Now even when I lay my head down at night
After a day I got perfectly right
She won't know.
She won't know.
So pray little Kay, love is just God on a good day.
And you can't blame your mother
She's trying not to see you as her worst mistake.
And I wish that I could tell you right now
But it looks like I won't be around
So you won't know
You won't know.
You won't know.
You won't know.
So be...

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Thought this video was kind of weird as I started watching it, but the song is really good, and Russell Brand is always worth watching. Used to really dig Oasis back when I first started playing guitar properly, they were the first band I learned all the songs to, so I'll always have a soft spot for anything those guys do.
Really good, timeless songwriting here, I dig.
